Menopause Through the Centuries:
Menopause and the symptoms of this phase like the infamous hot flashes where very much under a veil of mystery like other human biological and psychological processes in the past.
Menopause, when translated in Greek means the losing or the cessation of the “monthlies”, more popularly pertains to the period of a woman. Unfortunately there is but a vague and small amount of information regarding the subject on the phase that brings the onset of vaginal dryness, night sweats and the rest of the symptoms.
Like a coin, two sides mark the attitude towards this cycle if womanhood. Some civilizations and culture regard this as a natural cycle while others regard this as a point where a woman is ripe for the otherworldly activities such as pagan rituals. It is the moment wherein the woman is left with a single purpose of divination. This stage is called the “Crone Motherhood”.
The other side refers this stage as purely pathologic. It is an illness since the woman now is unable to bear children and is full of impure blood as to her inability to relieve it through menstruation.
Like most illnesses in the past, menopause was given outrageous medical explanations as well as interventions in dealing with it. In contrast to our current understanding and principles; mood swings, hot flashes, night sweats where the evidence of evil spirit corrupting the woman. It is also a sign that the woman is slowly decaying and losing both her physical and social status. Almost all of the European countries find the woman as such. While Asian, Native Americans or other Indian American culture believe it is a natural process.
